This is a brief history, as per the account of my previous clients who once resided in the area. Please Like ❤️&❤️ Subscribe to my page if you’re interested in Styvechale’s Property Prices and Market Trends.
Moor Street Earlsdon started out as a watch-making village in 1851, following the boom in the watchmaking trade in Coventry and therefore the overcrowding of the city. 30 acres of prime farm land, outside of the city boundary, was bought by the Coventry Freehold Land Society. The farmhouse was owned by John Moore and was close to what we now know as Moor Street Albany Road Even though Earlsdon had been incorporated into the city, it wasn’t until Albany Road opened in 1898 that the area started to develop further by extending the City’s Tram System. Earlsdon hasn’t really changed since 1920 so if you’d like to know more about the History of Earlsdon, there is a Millenium Heritage Trail which takes you to around 20 sites of historical interest. These are a few sites, starting off with my favourite.
So conditions in Coventry in the mid 1850’s were disgusting. Coventry suffered from overcrowding and sanitation shared by upto 6 families! This meant that Coventrians craved the surrounding countryside during weekends. For many years, the Jetty was the only route to and from the city. You can access some parts of the Jetty from the bottom of Newcombe Road up to Earlsdon Avenue North. It comes out between the library and the school.
Earlsdon’s First Shop
Located on the corner of Moor Street and Warwick Street. Now being a Samaritan shop, it started out as a bakery, and through the years has sold a wide variety of items such as teas, sauces and pickles, hams and bacon, cheese and biscuits; butter and eggs, potted and tinned meats; canned and fresh fish, mutton and lamb and all kinds of fruits from across the world.
Henry Bates Cottage
The premises now occupied by Kendalls Delicatessens is one of the oldest buildings in Earlsdon. The Cottage was built for Henry Bates in 1852. The property has changed hands a few times over the years. One owner was responsible for building some the the neighbouring properties. Over the years, property has been used by differing business and first floor was converted into self-contained flats, just before the war, in 1939.
